The Pope invited all the faithful to accompany the Christian faithful in China, “dearest brothers and sisters, whom I hold in the depth of my heart,” with “fervent prayer.”He prayed that the Holy Spirit, “the protagonist of the Church’s mission in the world, guide them and help them to be bearers of the happy message, witnesses of goodness and charity, and builders of justice and peace in their country.”
Pope Francis
“As President of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, and following the arrest on 11 May of my brother Cardinal and fellow Salesian, Cardinal Joseph Zen, 1 wish to express my profound concern about the situation for human rights and threats to religious freedom in Hong Kong. 1 call on Catholics and the wider Christian community around the world to pray for Hong Kong, and I urge the international community to continue to monitor the situation and speak out for freedom and justice”.
Cardinal Chales Bo
In unity and great love, let us join with the Church universal in our prayers to Our Lady Help of Christians, for China.
Bishop David Malloy, chairman, USCCB, Int’l Justice & Peace Committee
I hope that Catholics in England and Wales may take up Cardinal Bo’s call to mark this week with prayer for the Church in China and the peoples of China, asking Our Lady of Sheshan to protect them. This is also an important time to pray for the Chinese community in our own countries and celebrate their important contribution to our society.
Bishop Declan Lang
Pentecost Monday is the World Day of Prayer for China. This year, Cardinal Bo, President of the Asian Bishops’ Conferences, has called for a week of prayer for the Church and all people in China, starting at Pentecost. I join him in this. It is a matter close to my heart.
Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna
“Dear brothers and sisters of the universal Church, all of us are called to recognize as one of the signs of our times everything that is happening today in the life of the Church in China. We have an important duty: to accompany our brothers and sisters in China with fervent prayer and fraternal friendship. Indeed, they need to feel that in the journey that now lies ahead, they are not alone.”
Pope Francis
“On 24 May the Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China and the Feast of Mary Help of Christians and, for China, Our Mother of Sheshan. Last year I called for this tobe turned into a Week of Prayer each year, and I was heartened when a group of lay Catholics around the world took up my invitation and established the Global Week of Prayer for China. This year I urge Christians of all traditions everywhere to pray for Hong Kong especially, and the Church in China, as well as the Uyghurs, Tibetans and others facing persecution in China, during that Week of Prayer, and to pray especially for Cardinal Zen on 24 May itself as we seek the prayers of Mary Help of Christians”.
Cardinal Charles Bo
“Catholic Church in China, you are a small flock present and active within the vastness of an immense people journeying through history. How stirring and encouraging these words of Jesus are for you: ‘Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s pleasure to give you the kingdom’ (Lk 12:32)!”
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
“But all these efforts, all these sacrifices cannot remain without fruit: a day will come when Jesus can be proclaimed, passed on and celebrated in a more visible way through the culture, expectations and aspirations of the whole Chinese nation whom the Church deeply respects and loves.”
Saint Pope John Paul II
